Excel Import & Export for Azure Boards

Microsoft's own Office/Excel integration for Azure Boards is deprecated. This extension replaces that spreadsheet workflow entirely in the browser: export a saved query or WIQL to a styled, typed .xlsx workbook, edit it, then re-import it with a dry run before anything writes.

What is Excel Import & Export for Azure Boards?

Excel Import & Export for Azure Boards is an Azure DevOps extension published by Cody Labs. Pick a saved query or write WIQL, and it exports the matching work items to a styled, typed .xlsx workbook — dates as real date cells, numbers as numbers, assignees as display names. Edit the file, upload it back, and the extension auto-maps columns to work item fields, runs a dry-run validation pass that reports create, update, skip, error, or warning for every row, and commits only the plan you reviewed, as you. It runs entirely inside its own work-hub iframe using your own Azure DevOps credentials: we operate no servers and never receive your work item data. See the privacy policy for full details.

What it does

Uncapped, typed export

Export a saved query or WIQL result to a styled .xlsx workbook with real date, number, and identity-typed cells.

Validated Excel & CSV import

Upload an edited workbook or CSV; columns auto-map to work item fields, with reusable mapping presets.

Dry run before commit

Every row is reported as create, update, skip, error, or warning before anything is written.

Client-side privacy

Runs entirely inside the extension's own work-hub iframe using your Azure DevOps credentials — no Cody Labs server.

How it works

Export, edit, re-import — nothing writes to Azure Boards until you have reviewed the dry run.

  1. Export a saved query or WIQL result

Open the extension from Boards, choose a saved query or write WIQL directly, and download a styled .xlsx workbook — batched to include every matching work item, not just the first page.

  2. Edit the workbook

Change values in Excel, or hand the file to a teammate for review. Auto-mapping matches columns to work item fields by header name, and mapping presets make repeat imports one click.

  3. Check the dry run before anything commits

The dry run validates editable fields, allowed picklist values, identity resolution, and work item type before showing what would change. Only when you accept it does anything write to Azure Boards.

  4. Commit, and get a per-row report

Rows are committed as you, chunked with limited concurrency. The final report lists each row's result and a deep link to the resulting work item.

What you need before you start

  • An Azure DevOps organization, and permission to view the work items you export.
  • Permission to edit those work items if you intend to import changes back.
  • Nothing else — there is no server to run, and no work item data leaves Azure DevOps.

Frequently asked questions

Does it replace Microsoft's Excel integration for Azure Boards?

Yes. Microsoft's own Office/Excel integration for Azure Boards is deprecated; this extension replaces that spreadsheet workflow entirely in the browser.

Is there a row cap?

Free exports up to 250 rows per workbook and imports up to 25 rows per run; Pro removes both caps.

Does work item data leave Azure DevOps?

No. The extension runs client-side in its own work-hub iframe using your own Azure DevOps credentials; Cody Labs operates no server.
